Today, I got a garage sale video of "The Outsiders" to send to my niece, who's fourteen. That's about the right age to appreciate young and misunderstood Patrick Swaze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estavez, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Leif Garrett, Rob Lowe, et al in denim and black leather. Diane Lane was gorgeous, but most of the eye candy is for the ladies.
I think I sent my niece a copy of the book, but I never get any feedback. You cast your bread on the water .
Susie Hinton was fifteen when she wrote it. The story goes that she was severely criticized for an English paper in school and went home that afternoon to find a letter of acceptance from her publisher. For marketing purposes, she was called "S.E. Hinton" and her photo wasn't put on the book cover.
Francis Ford Coppola did a bang-up job on the movie. I notice more each time I see it.
I also purchased a hassock which effectively converts my favorite armchair into a recliner at just the right height that I can still see the TV over my feet. Fine entertainment and dirty socks don't complement each other.
It opens for storage, so when company comes at short notice I can toss my beer cans into the hassock.

i have a niece who is a lazy bitch, and over the Christmas vacation i tried to force her to read "A Tale of Two Cities", NOT the whole book, mind you, but the first section....
Personally, i cannot understand any kid who is not fascinated by Charles Dickens since i read most of his oeuvre by the age of ten...kids are different today, i hear every mother say....
i doubt your niece will dig "The Outsiders" because it is basically a GUY book, although chicks love Pony Boy....alas, an appreciation for literature today is a lost art, which is why i AM glad to see you support Vampire Kitty...WE gotta encourage THOSE who embrace the dying arts
whatever happened to all those guys? especially that Tom... Tom Cruise, was it?
'love the background story on Hinton, by the way.
Thanks.
when I was thirteen, I fell madly in love with Ponyboy... only to leave him for Holden Caulfield when I was fifteen... ::sigh::
Wow, great flick, great book, good recommendation to your niece! And you taught me something - I didn't know Leif Garrett was in it
Fifteen?? She wrote that when she was fifteen??? I am feeling very inferior right now.
You haven't peaked out yet.
