    WASHINGTON - The United States CIA paid mullahs and created fake Islamic religious leaders to preach a moderate message.


    "In Islam, as in many other religions, anyone can call himself a religious leader. So, besides paying mullahs, the CIA created fake mullahs - recruited agents who would proclaim themselves clerics and take a more moderate position."


    The CIA also paid for mullahs to issue fatwas, or religious edicts.

    Farm animals banned from council flats in Kiev

    Farm animals have been banned from council flats in Kiev after a survey found residents were keeping more than 3,000 pigs, 500 cows and 1,000 goats.


    City authorities say the flats and especially the balconies were not designed for the weight of heavy animals like cows and that their urine was destroying the buildings.


    However, flat owners say the animals help keep the flats warm in winter, provide fertiliser for their allotments and much needed food.

    SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A Swedish man tried to smuggle eight dangerous snakes into Australia by strapping them to his legs . . .


    The snakes - which included four deadly King Cobras - were handed over to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

    Bassett hound Mr Jeffries has been declared the dog with the world's longest ears.

    He has beaten his own grandfather to the title. His grandfather was Biggles, the face of Hush Puppies shoes.


    Owner Phil Jeffries said his pet was often standing on his ears, tripping over them and dragging them in his food.

  • Warning on ice cube enemas

    DRUG and medical experts have issued a warning following evidence that would-be first aiders have been using ice cube "enemas" to revive people from drug overdoses.

    Experts say putting ice cubes up the rectums of unconscious people has no physiological benefit and can even lead to seizures and stroke.

    Hyles-Anderson College students were heading to Chicago for ministry work

    SOUTH HOLLAND -- A bus filled with 45 Hyles-Anderson College coeds heading to Chicago to do missionary work rolled onto its side and skidded about 25 feet before coming to a stop . . .


    The driver reported that "passengers were standing in the aisle, singing and rocking back and forth," causing him to lose control of the bus.
