  • The Fellowship Baptist Creation Science Fair was started to get kids excited about Creation and motivate them to discover the truth of our Lord.

1st Place: "My Uncle Is A Man Named Steve (Not A Monkey)"

Cassidy Turnbull (grade 5) presented her uncle, Steve. She also showed photographs of monkeys and invited fairgoers to note the differences between her uncle and the monkeys. She tried to feed her uncle bananas, but he declined to eat them. Cassidy has conclusively shown that her uncle is no monkey.

2nd Place: "Women Were Designed For Homemaking"

Jonathan Goode (grade 7) applied findings from many fields of science to support his conclusion that God designed women for homemaking: physics shows that women have a lower center of gravity than men, making them more suited to carrying groceries and laundry baskets; biology shows that women were designed to carry un-born babies in their wombs and to feed born babies milk, making them the natural choice for child rearing; social sciences show that the wages for women workers are lower than for normal workers, meaning that they are unable to work as well and thus earn equal pay; and exegetics shows that God created Eve as a companion for Adam, not as a co-worker.

    Honorable Mention:

"Mousetrap Reduced To Pile Of Functionless Parts" - Kevin Parker (grade 7)
"Dinosaur & Man Walked Together" - Donny Findlay (grade 6)
"Rocks Can't Evolve, Where Did They Come From Mr. Darwin?" - Anna Reed (grade 6)

  • Mystery Creature Causes
    Havoc in Puerto Rico

    by Scott Corrales

The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico has been galvanized by numerous sightings of a strange, livestock-killing creature which has been dubbed "el Chupacabras" (The Goatsucker) as a result of its penchant for sucking the blood out of goats, chickens, and household pets

The enigmatic creature can best be described as a cross between one of the "Grey" aliens and a terrestrial animal such as a porcupine or a kangaroo due to the presence of quill-like appendages running down its back and enormously powerful hind legs which enable it to leap over trees in a single bound.

    2. DYSENTERY STOOL-SAMPLE ANALYZER
    ##

In the early '80s, Virginia Tech profs Tracy Wilkins and David Lyerly studied the diarrhea-causing microbe Clostridium difficile in sample after sample after sample of loose stool from the disease's victims. They became such crack dysentery docs that they launched a company, Techlab, dedicated to making stool-analysis kits. Today, Techlab employs 40 people, 19 of whom spend their working hours opening sloppy stool canisters and analyzing their contents in order to test the effectiveness of the company's kits.

  • Buddhist Monk Completes Seven-Year Run

By KENJI HALL, Associated Press Writer

TOKYO - A Buddhist priest has completed an ancient running ritual in the remote Japanese mountains and covered a distance equivalent to a trip round the globe, wearing only a flowing white robe and flimsy straw sandals.

Genshin Fujinami, returned Thursday from his 24,800-mile spiritual journey in the Hiei mountains.

Since 1885, only 46 other so-called "marathon monks" of the Tendai sect have survived the ritual.

Traditionally, any monk, or gyoja, who can't continue to the end must take his own live, either by hanging or disembowelment.

  • Manitoba government backs away from fruit-flavoured condoms for prisoners

    By STEVE LAMBERT

    Mon, September 15, 2003

WINNIPEG (CP) - The government initially issued a tender on Friday for a two-year supply of condoms to prisoners in 10 facilities. And the tender made it clear that not just any condom would suffice. "Condom, lubricated, assorted flavours - strawberry, banana and vanilla - Lifestyles 6811 or approved alternate, no substitutions on quality."

It also stipulated: "These are non-spermicidal lubricated condoms."

That got a rise out of the Opposition Conservatives, who have been demanding more money for farmers hurt by the mad cow scare.

  • Russians lost in mushroom heaven

A bumper mushroom crop in Russia this year has pleased everyone except officials of the Emergencies Ministry in St Petersburg.

They are the ones that have to go looking for mushroom hunters who get lost in the forests near the city - a total of 121 people since 1 August.

    11 are currently unaccounted for.

The discovery of hallucinogenic mushrooms in the area in recent years raises the possibility that some lost people may not just have taken a wrong turning.

    Russian mushroom pickers threaten aircraft

    Tawny grisette mushroom

Collecting mushrooms, such as this tawny grisette (Amanita fulva), is a Russian passion

    By Steve Rosenberg in Moscow

The local authorities of a small town in Russia's Far North have been forced to issue strict laws to keep rogue mushroom-pickers away from the local airport runway.

The pickers have been causing havoc, preventing flights from landing and creating a major security risk.
