Church rules chess is not the work of the devil

The Russian Orthodox Church has rejected a request to brand chess as the "work of the devil".

A young churchgoer led a campaign and organised a petition claiming chess was the work of the devil.

Archbishop Wikenti rejected the request, but added that "passionate games and arousing games that cause confusion, anger and irritation" are banned by the Church, including computer games.

    Jerry Lewis Kicks Steroids

    by Lia Haberman
    Jan 27, 2004, 12:30 PM PT

Rubber-faced funnyman Jerry Lewis is 50 pounds lighter...

Lewis lost the pounds after weaning himself off prednisone, a steroid drug he had been taking since 2001 for pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung ailment.

The entertainer's face had become distorted as a side-effect of the steroids--at one point, Lewis' weight ballooned to 242 pounds.

The erstwhile Nutty Professor still hopes to lose 20 pounds.

DOWNING Street has come up with a strategy to curb embarrassing internal e-mails by replacing electronic messages with sticky notes.

Staff at No 10 are to be encouraged to leave messages for each other on Post-it style notes that can be torn up and destroyed without a trace.

The move follows a barrage of highly embarrassing electronic mails that came back to haunt the government.

The idea is thought to have been borrowed from the White House.

  •                                Mauritanian women

    By Pascale Harter
    BBC, Mauritania

Obesity is so revered among Mauritania's white Moor Arab population that the young girls are sometimes force-fed.

A generation ago, over a third of women in the country were force-fed as children - Mauritania is one of the few African countries where, on average, girls receive more food than boys.

"I make them eat lots of dates, lots and lots of couscous and other fattening food," Fatematou, a voluminous woman in her sixties who runs a kind of "fat farm."

"Of course they cry - they scream."

"When they are small they don't understand, but when they grow up they are fat and beautiful. They are proud and show off their good size to make men dribble."

" I've seen 10-year old girls give birth. I tell you, 10 years old! Once they are fat and beautiful they can serve their men well."

LITTLE ROCK - Two men accused of mailing a poisonous snake to a man upset over an allegedly faulty ATV are preparing to plead guilty to reduced charges.

The trial of Jerrod Castleman and his father, Pocahontas lawyer and former district judge Bob Castleman, was put on hold Monday. The two are charged with mailing a live copperhead to Albert Coy Staton in September 2002.

The Castlemans had initially intended to plead guilty Monday, but Bob Castleman still had traces of marijuana in his system.

The Castlemans were charged with making a threat by mail, in addition to the mailing "nonmailable" material charge. The elder Castleman also was charged with witness tampering.

Cosmetic tattoo artist gets eye liner requests -- for horses

Cosmetic tattoo artist Teri Reid does not usually have to put her customers under general anesthesia when she is applying permanent eyeliner.

The tattoos she puts on American paint horses are not for cosmetic reasons, however. Unlike horses with dark coats, the dappled dark and light coloring of paint horses can leave little natural pigmentation around the eyes.

When the horse is exposed to sunlight, the resulting glare can lead to squinting, sunburns, cataracts and cancer.
