Death at hospital ruled a homicide

    Tuesday, October 05, 2004

Montrose County Coroner Mark Young said Montrose Memorial Hospital did not follow 'accepted medical standards' last month in determining William Rardin, 36, brain dead. "A confirmatory test should have been completed."

The Donor Alliance, the organization that coordinates organ donation for Colorado and Wyoming, did not accept the declaration of death.

Young ruled the cause of death as the removal of Rardin’s organs by an organ recovery team. Surgeons removed his heart, liver, pancreas and two kidneys. All five organs were transplanted into Colorado patients.

"I’m taking the donor thing off my driver’s license. I don’t mind donating if I’m dead, but hopefully the results of this incident will mean new standards will be established.”

  • Recently, Greyfox signed one of those donor forms and brought some home for Doug and me. I procrastinated, and now I'm reconsidering. My organs are in fairly bad shape, anyway. But what really slowed me down on filling out that form was their slogan: "Heaven knows you won't need your organs there." Puh-leez!

  • My brother told me something like that when I was first getting my learner's permit, so I checked the "undecided" box... And they listed me as an organ donor anyway! Those bastards.

  • Thanks for appreciating my hard work, heh.  Yeah, I paid attention.  And, when I wanted some quotes I remembered but didn't know the exact of, I watched it again and took the quotes down.  I love this stuff, it's candy to me!  I did the same 4 years ago as well.  Yeah, I do get to vote.  I turned 18 in sept, and am already registered.  Yay voting!
