  The Honensai Matsuri shrine at Tagata Shrine is one of many festivals based around a specific benefit offered by the shrine; in this case, fertility. Fertility is a common theme in Shinto, and phallic symbolism and images are utilized in numerous Shinto shrines throughout Japan. The scale and graphic nature of the Tagata festival stands in contrast to the more restrained treatment these themes have received over time in other shrines.
