  • Family of man who gave body to science is suing

By Ramon Coronado -- Bee Staff Writer

The family of a man whose body was donated to UC Davis Medical Center for research is suing the center ...

Alan, David, Scott and Terry Whitten filed suit in Sacramento Superior Court recently alleging negligence and the intentional infliction of emotional distress as a result of the discovery that their father's head had been kept in a bag stored in the assistant's tool shed for nearly 11 years.

The suit said medical center officials assured the family that Whitten's remains would be treated with respect and care.

  • RAPID CITY, S.D. - Jerry Derr, investigative chief for the South Dakota Brand Board, is investigating reports that two 1 1/2-year-old fillies and another horse have had varying portions of their tails and manes clipped.

Thieves, using shears instead of scissors, trimmed underneath the manes so the loss wouldn't be noticeable right away.

"It's somebody who knew what they were doing,"

The thieves likely have sold the hair or used it to make braided horsehair hatbands or belts.

  • OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - An Oklahoma family that thought they had just buried a son received a phone call after returning from the funeral from the supposed dead man.

Relatives of Kevin Wyckoff, an inmate in Oklahoma's Lexington Correctional Facility, were victims of a case of mistaken identity.

.The family was sent the body of another inmate of similar physical characteristics as their son. The two inmates had recently switched cells, which led to prison officials being confused about their identities.

The Wyckoff family has told reporters they are happy their son is still alive but they have a few questions for prison officials ...

    Transgender Targets Campus Restrooms

A coalition of homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgenders at the University of Chicago are calling for "gender neutral" restrooms for students who are confused about their sexual identity.

In late November, members of the Center for Gender Studies  held a panel discussion on the need for "gender neutral" restrooms on campus.

Advocates of unisex restrooms complained that choosing a restroom door is a defining moment for people who are not sure if they're males or females. Restrooms with "male" or "female" on the doors make these individuals feel uncomfortable and must be changed.

The panelists recommended that all restrooms be made gender neutral allowing males and females to use either ones.

  • Swedish baby baked in oven

Police have arrested a mother for allegedly baking her five-month-old baby in an oven.

The child received second-degree burns all over his body during the incident last weekend, and was in stable condition in a Gothenburg hospital.

Police quickly grew suspicious that the child's 30-year-old mother had inflicted the injuries.

The woman was reportedly being held at a psychiatric emergency ward.

  • Army Thin-Skinned Over Homemade Armor
    By David A. Lieb

    Friday, December 26, 2003

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Fearing roadside bombs and sniper bullets, members of the U.S. Army Reserve's 428th Transportation Company turned to a local steel fabricator to fashion extra armor for their five-ton trucks and Humvees before beginning their journey to Iraq earlier this month.

But their armor might not make it into the war, because the soldiers did not obtain Pentagon approval

"There's policy you have to consider before you go out on your own and try to do something."

The 72 vehicles operated by the 428th have thin metal floorboards and, in some cases, a canvas covering for doors.

The soldiers persuaded a local funeral home director who is active in community affairs to pay the $4,000 tab for 13,000 pounds of quarter-inch steel.

  • MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) - Munich firefighters were called out on Christmas day to rescue a flock of seagulls that got stuck when a lake near the city's Olympic stadium froze over.

"They didn't notice it was getting colder and their tails got frozen stuck. We were able to help most wiggle free but one bird was so stuck so we had to cut out the whole chunk of ice and take the whole thing back to the station."

    Possibly Rabid Racoon Becomes Dinner

    The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. Dec. 25 — A fraternity member was treated for possible exposure to rabies, and he and two others could be expelled for beating, skinning and then eating a raccoon that might have had the disease

The men had spotted the raccoon behaving erratically outside the Phi Kappa Psi house at the University of Georgia on Dec. 12. One hit it with construction pylon and shot it with a pellet gun in the fraternity's parking lot.  Another skinned the raccoon, and a third cooked and ate some of its meat.

The three members involved will go before the fraternity's grievance committee and face possible sanctions .
