A captain and two senior officers of a cargo ship have been detained by Spanish police after they allegedly cast four Senegalese stowaways adrift. The stowaways became castaways when they were forced by the officers into a one-man raft and then cast adrift.
Apparently, the officers were trying to save money as they would have had to pay for the repatriation of the stowaways if it had docked with them on board. Now the stowaways can only survive if they are spotted by a passing ship. Their last known position was over 1,000 km south of the Canary Islands. The captain and officers were arrested when their ship, the Wisteria, docked in a Spanish port.
