The iVotronic voting machines from Election Systems and Software of Omaha, is represented in Florida by Sandra Mortham. These machines were immediately certified by the fair-minded Secretary of State, Katherine Harris. The problem? Mortham was the Republican Secretary of State before Harris. She was the one who hired the firm DBT to purge the voter roles in the 2000 election, costing many innocent, mostly black, mostly Democratic, their right to vote.
This time, they tried to keep the list a secret.
More bad news. Way back in March, during the Presidential primary in Florida, there were "problems". From an AP story March 10:
"The most reported problem: Democrats couldn't vote in their party's presidential primary because poll workers pushed the wrong buttons to activate their voting machine key cards.
Some caught the error in time, but others realized it only after voting in municipal races and then asking why their ballots didn't have the presidential primary. They said they got either apologies for the mistake or blame for not speaking up sooner, but in either case, they didn't get to vote."
So, if you live in Florida, for your own sake, request an absentee ballot! With the touch screen stuff, there's no paper trail. No possibility of a recount. No telling how many wrong buttons will get pushed. At least with absentee ballots, there is a paper trail.
