    Which Holocaust Matters?

    by Manuel García, Jr.

Which Holocaust should Americans be most concerned about: the WWII Holocaust of European Jewry, the American Back Slavery Holocaust, or the North American Indian Holocaust? Interestingly, about 6 million people were consumed in each, though the time spans were 12, 200 and 400 years, respectively.

The Nazi's processing rate was at least 50 times that of the Native American removal or the Black slave accrual rates. It is the industrialized acceleration of the human removal rate that gives the Nazi-driven Holocaust its ferocious psychological shock.

Rounding out all the figures -- rather broadly -- we can put it simply this way: 6 M North American Indians done away with in 400 years and by 100 years ago could be psychologically accommodated by people living during the process -- and now. Similarly, under 6 M Blacks enslaved or born into slavery in the USA over 200 years and by 100 years ago could also be accommodated by most people then and now.

However, the elimination of 6 M Jews (and others) during 12 years of still living memory is too close to be entirely brushed away as "history," of which we, our nations and our institutions can be entirely absolved of responsibility. Even so, most people find it easy to let the Jewish Holocaust slip into the "memory hole" along with American Black slavery and the "Indian Removal."

    Diver's remains found

    Wednesday, September 8, 2004

    By MIKE GENIELLA
    THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

A beachcomber strolling on a Mendocino County beach found a human head three weeks after a fatal shark attack that killed sports fishing advocate Randall Fry.

Mendocino County authorities on Tuesday said the head belonged to Fry. The discovery was made last Friday on Ten Mile Beach north of Fort Bragg.

Fry, a nationally known sports fishing advocate, was killed when he was attacked by a great white shark while abalone diving with a longtime friend in shallow water north of Ten Mile Beach. Fry, 50, was the 11th person to have been killed in shark attacks on the West Coast since 1952.

Wearing a wetsuit, he was diving head first in about 15 feet of water when the shark swiftly moved in and attacked. The shark apparently ripped Fry's head and neck from his body, a move sharks usually reserve for marine mammals.

In a secret Paris cavern, the real underground cinema

    Jon Henley in Paris
    Wednesday September 8, 2004

Police in Paris have discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern underneath the capital's chic 16th arrondissement. Officers admit they are at a loss to know who built or used one of Paris's most intriguing recent discoveries.

"There were two swastikas painted on the ceiling, but also celtic crosses and several stars of David, so we don't think it's extremists. Some sect or secret society, maybe."

The police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said.

    Prisoners milk redbacks for venom

    07sep04

NSW prison inmates kept deadly redback spiders to milk their venom and inject themselves for a hit. The State Opposition also revealed today that some other prisoners managed to cultivate a 40cm marijuana plant in the grounds of another jail.

The four 'pet' redbacks were discovered at Grafton prison on February 19 this year. Their venom had been milked and watered down to be injected for a high. The marijuana plant was found at Long Bay jail four days later.

Figures obtained by the Opposition show weapons in NSW prisons have quadrupled in 12 months, while drug use and jail brewing have doubled.

    The Male Pelvic Trainer (60278)

The Male Pelvic Trainer forms a vital component of the clinical skills instruction and examination programme.

    The modular design provides for:

    • dry catheterisation
    • testicular examination
    • rectal examination

The soft tissue elements of the Male Pelvic Trainer are designed in a modular way: the penis and prostate are removable and replaceable, the perineum, testicles and bowel are a separate component, as is the abdominal wall.

This model forms a part of a group of models which provide for a full range of examinations which would need to be carried out on the male patient.

  • King Mswati III
Mswati chooses a new wife every year

Africa's last absolute monarch, King Mswati III, has chosen a 16-year-old beauty queen as his latest bride-to-be. The Miss Teenage Swaziland finalist appeared at last week's annual reed dance during which 20,000 bare-breasted virgins parade in his honour.

The 36-year-old king's behaviour has been criticised in a nation with one of the world's highest HIV/AIDS rates. He already has one fiancee and 11 wives.

Plans to build new palaces for each of his wives are also draining the tiny country's resources, with the IMF urging cut-backs as poverty and food shortages hit ordinary Swazis.

    Science Image: brain scan

In Dante's Inferno, the inner circle of hell was reserved for betrayers like Judas and Brutus. But new research indicates that punishing those who break social norms is not merely the province of poets. Scientists have uncovered evidence for an innate satisfaction in human beings for giving people their comeuppance.

"Emotions play a proactive as well as reactive role," remarks Brian Knutson of Stanford University. He notes that "passionate" forces may need to be included in economic models because, as this research shows, “people show systematic deviations from rationality." --Michael Schirber

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (Reuters) - President Bush offered an unexpected reason on Monday for cracking down on frivolous medical lawsuits.

At a rally of cheering supporters in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Bush made his usual pitch for limiting "frivolous lawsuits" that he said drive up the cost of health care and run doctors out of business.

But then he added, "We've got an issue in America. Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."
